Using Wood Protection Agents
Since time immemorial wood has been considered the best material for house construction. Being an elastic and strong construction material, wood is easily machined.
A man feels comfortable and breathes easily in a wooden house - the optimum oxygen balance and humidity are maintained in it at all times. Nature granted to wood a unique ability to accumulate warmth during summer and preserve it during winter. For these reasons a wooden house is perfectly suitable for regions with any kind of climate.
And if you own a wooden house, it is you who should know that the warm sunny color of natural wood is beneficial to your psychological conditions, it creates a feeling of peace and contributes to complete rest.
However, alongside the advantages which distinguish wood favorably from other construction materials, wood has some drawbacks - the most prominent of which are its high inflammability, burning intensity, rapid loss of its tensile and decorative properties without proper protection from atmoshperic effects, as well as destruction as a result of the activity of various microorganisms and insects. Still, the restoration of the original look of the already damaged wood is associated with considerable expenses, and sometimes is simply impossible. It is, therefore, very important to properly protect it from dangers in every single case.
Danger No. 1 - FIRE.
The problem of protecting the wood from fire is solved by different ways, the most effective of which are fire-retardant coating (intumescent paints) and impregnation with special compounds (fire-retarding agents). The first technique of fire protection is to apply to the protected material a layer of coating the efficiency of which is determined by its physical and chemical properties and the ability to firmly adhere to the painted surface. By a local short exposure of a heat source the fire-retarding coatings impede the ignitition of wooden structures, facilitate the fire extinguishing, and in some cases exclude the possibility of the ignition itself. Fire protection by deep impregnation provides for the protection of wooden structures against ignition by local fire effect in the conditions of fire development. In this case, only charring of the material is observed, limited by the area of the fire effect.
Danger No. 2 - ATMOSPHERIC EFFECTS.
It is a known fact, that in the open wood weathers, with all the consequences this brings, much faster, than inside a room. The following factors are among those which have a negative effect on wood: frequent periods of wettening and drying, freezing and thawing, ultraviolet emission.
Danger No. 3 - MICROORGANISM.
Life activity of various microorganisms has a negative effect on wood; this mainly refers to wood-staining, mold, and wood-destroying fungi. Wood-staining and mold fungi form stains and deposits of different colors. These fungi do not destroy xylogen and wood pulp, and therefore the physical and chemical properties of wood are practically not altered, still they decrease its decorative value, thus seemingly warning of the contamination with wood-destroying fungi. Wood-destroying fungi produce enzymes which dissolve wood cell walls, transforming them into their nutritive substances. As a result, the mechanical properties of the wood are deteriorated, and its physical and chemical properties are altered. Fungi are developed in wood under certain temperature conditions (0 to + 45 С) and excessive humidity (23 - 100 %). The wood damaged by fungi may later be damaged by insects. The wood contacting soil rots especially fast, as it contains a large number of microorganisms capable of destroying wood, and so does the wood in poorly ventilated places inside a house, where humidity is high round the year (basement, pits, window ledge logs).
Danger No. 4 - INSECTS.
Wood-destroying insects may damage both living trees, and wet and dry timber. From all the variety of insects wood is only damaged by three orders - beetles, ants and wasps, termites. Insects pass several stages in their development, the longest and most harmful stage is the larval stage. If a tree is damaged by insects, the adult species exit holes are clearly seen on the surface. Brownish powder consisting of the insects' life products and wood chip may come out of the holes.
You should not be intimidated by these dangers, though, as there is a RELIABLE PROTECTION from them.
The most efficient technique is the preventive application of protective agents and regular renewal of the protective coating of the used wood. If we consider the the problem of protecting wood from the above factors in a simplified manner, the protective agent must block the access of water to the wood surface, protect it from ultraviolet emission, and prevent biological damage to the wood during a period as long as possible. Still, it should be kept in mind that wood preserves the structure of a "living" organism - it "breathes", accumulating and transmitting various vapors, inluding moisture. Excessive blocking of the tree pores may in some cases result in its mechanical deformation.
The protection of wood from must be carried out by state-of-the-art means which have a selective effect on specific microorganisms and are safe for man, animals and environment-friendly.
Complex Wood Protection - one of the lines of activity pursued by NPP Rogneda. The new developments are environmentally friendly, they are used for inside and outside work and have a lasting effect.
What is the right way to choose wood protecting agents?
Such means of wood protection, as oil varnish and oil paint, have been known for a long time. The disadvantages of such agents are: long drying time, relatively low decorative value and absence of preservation properties.
During the recent decades impregnating compounds based on alkyd resins in organic solvents and relatively new compounds based on water dispersion of synthetic polymers have become popular.
As regards water-based compounds, their strengths are: weak to no odor, quick drying with the formation of a strong, water-tight, but "breathin" film on the surface, and quite high decorative value of the coating. These advantages make such materials indispensable when working inside.
Compounds based on alkyd resins have high protective and decorative value. They stress the natural wood texture and, besides, make it possible to imitate finewood. The solvent they contain - white spirirt - provides for good adhesion and deep penetration of the useful (protective) substances in the underlayer, as well as destroys the microorganisms and insects in the upper layer of the wood.
To ensure complex protection of wood, it is necessary to apply several compounds with different properties successively, and the last layer is made by texturing coating giving decorative value to the wood.
What is the right way to prepare wood surface for processing? :
- the processed surface must be dry, clean and free from any other paint and lacquer coatings
- the surfaces containing old paint and lacquer coatings must be thoroughly processed (scraped, sand-papered, etc.), to give them an equal saturation capacity along the entire area
- the intensity of the coating color largely depends on the type of wood, surface processing quality, and the number of the applied layers, i.e. the more layers there are, the more intensive is the color.
- It is forbidden to process "frozen" wood.
- The processing must in all cases be performed at the temperature of +10 to +40°С (the optimum termperature is +20 +25°C). It is forbidden to process wood at the temperature of air or the processed surface below +5°C.
- When applying biological protection compounds produced by NPP Rogneda it is recommended to adhere to the procedure of preparing the compounds, consumption rates, application methods, provided on the labels or in the application instructions for every spcecific kind of products.
